Sa Nang Manora Forest Park

A 2 km forest trail loops from a roadside waterfall to a shell-and-bat cave inside this small, mostly overlooked park on Khao Thoi hill, about 4 km north of Phang Nga town. Established on 15 September 1980, Sa Nang Manora Forest Park covers just 0.29 sq km (roughly 180 rai) — a fraction of the size of Khao Sok or Similan further down the coast — which is part of why it stays quiet even in high season.

The waterfall sits near the parking area rather than deep in the forest, tumbling over a series of shaded rock shelves into small basins shallow enough to wade or cool off in; on weekends it draws local families for a swim more than it draws tour groups. From there, the trail runs mostly flat through evergreen forest — species here include sonneratia, shorea, and saraca alongside ferns and moss-covered boulders — before reaching a cave used by fruit bats and studded with shell fossils, a legacy of the limestone terrain that defines much of Phang Nga province. The 2 km round trip is an easy walk rather than a hike; sturdy sandals are enough in dry weather, though the rock can get slick after rain.

Insider Tip: Visit early morning if you’re combining this with a James Bond Island boat tour — several operators bound for Phang Nga Bay route through Phang Nga town first, and the park is a natural stop on the way to or from the piers, quiet enough to enjoy before the bay trip gets busy.

There’s no ticket booth and no set closing gate — the park runs on the honour system typical of Thailand’s smaller forest parks, with free entry and basic facilities (toilets, parking, a couple of drink stalls) rather than a visitor centre. Bring insect repellent and water; there’s shade for most of the walk but little once you’re near the open waterfall basins at midday.

The forest itself is worth slowing down for even without the waterfall or cave: sonneratia and shorea trees form a closed canopy overhead, with saraca and scattered orchids growing along the damper stretches of trail near the stream. Because the park is so small and rarely crowded, it’s a reasonable spot to actually hear the forest — birdsong and running water rather than tour-group chatter — something harder to find at Phang Nga’s bigger, boat-tour-driven attractions.
