Ton Pariwat Wildlife Sanctuary

Ton Pariwat Wildlife Sanctuary protects about 224 square kilometres of forested hills in Phang Nga, centred on the Song Phraek subdistrict. General access is free, and the sanctuary is best known for whitewater rafting on the Song Phraek river rather than a single sightseeing stop.

This is a working conservation area, not a landscaped park — a wildlife sanctuary designation under Thai law, which restricts activity more tightly than a national park to protect the species living inside it. The main visitor draw is the Song Phraek river, which drops from the Kata Kwam and Ra Sung mountains through the reserve and hosts one of Phang Nga’s more established whitewater rafting routes, a roughly 45-minute run available through licensed operators year-round, with a stronger current from July to November.

Experience

Beyond the river, the sanctuary is genuine forest habitat rather than a curated wildlife-viewing circuit. It’s documented to protect wild elephants, Malayan tapirs, gaur, southern white-handed gibbons, and Malayan sun bears, along with rarer finds like the blue-banded kingfisher and the Rafflesia kerrii — one of the world’s largest flowers, which blooms briefly and unpredictably. None of these are guaranteed sightings; the appeal is the intact habitat itself, reachable on forest trails from the sanctuary headquarters near Song Phraek. The dedicated Ton Pariwat Waterfall sits close to headquarters and is the easiest single feature to combine with a sanctuary visit.

Atmosphere & Timing

Because this is a protected reserve rather than a tourist park, facilities are basic — expect a ranger station rather than a visitor centre with amenities. Trails can turn slippery in the rainy season (roughly May-October), and the rafting operators adjust trips around river conditions rather than a fixed booking calendar.

Insider Tip: Book the Song Phraek rafting trip through an established local operator rather than turning up independently — the put-in points and permitted stretches of river are managed, and an operator handles the logistics DIY visitors can’t easily arrange themselves.

Watch out: No pets. As a wildlife sanctuary, Ton Pariwat has tighter access rules than an ordinary national park precisely because it protects breeding populations of endangered species — don’t plan on bringing a dog here.

Sturdy shoes and insect repellent are worth packing for any trail walking — this is working rainforest, not a paved park.
