Somdet Phra Sri Nakharin Park (Stone Park)

Somdet Phra Sri Nakharin Park — known locally as Stone Park — is a 600-rai memorial garden in Nong Ya subdistrict, Kanchanaburi, created for Princess Srinagarindra’s 80th birthday. Despite the name, it isn’t a national park: Kanchanaburi College of Agriculture and Technology manages the grounds. Entry is free, open daily 08:30-16:30.

About 200 of the park’s 600 rai are covered in limestone outcrops, weathered over a long span of time into shapes locals point out as tigers, lions, fish, whales, rhinos, and other animals — the kind of pareidolia every karst landscape invites, but genuinely varied here. Trails link the rock clusters and lead into a scatter of small cave chambers with stalactites and stalagmites, cool enough to be a relief from Kanchanaburi’s heat. Trees and undergrowth push up between the stone, and deer, barking deer, wild rabbits, and pheasants are reported on the grounds, alongside a mix of resident and migratory birds.

The atmosphere is quiet rather than dramatic — this is a modest provincial park, not a headline national park, and it draws a fraction of the visitors that Kanchanaburi’s war-history sites or Erawan Waterfall get. That’s part of its appeal if you want somewhere uncrowded to walk for an hour. Beyond the rock garden, the wider grounds sit on naturally undulating highland forest with two streams, Huay Pun Yai and Huay Pun Noi, converging at the park’s northern edge — dense dipterocarp woodland rather than manicured landscaping.

Two routes lead in: one through the agricultural college campus that manages the site, the other off Saeng Chuto Road on the edge of Kanchanaburi town. Neither is signposted for tourists in the way Kanchanaburi’s bigger attractions are, so it helps to have the location saved before setting out.

Insider Tip: Go early morning for the coolest temperatures and the best light on the limestone — there’s little shade once you’re off the cave trails.

Watch out: Facilities are minimal and public transport doesn’t reach the park directly — bring your own water and plan on driving or riding in from Kanchanaburi town.
