Wang Sam Mo Forest Park
วนอุทยานวังสามหมอ
Wang Sam Mo Forest Park protects roughly 18,750 rai (about 30 sq km) of dry dipterocarp forest in Udon Thani’s Wang Sam Mo district, gazetted as a forest park on 19 January 1984. It’s a smaller, looser designation than a national park — no entrance fee, no visitor centre crowds — which makes it one of the province’s more low-key day trips for anyone wanting forest without the formality.
The park sits within a stretch of reserved forest around Nong Kung Thap Ma subdistrict, roughly 20 km from Wang Sam Mo district town and about 120 km from Udon Thani city. The terrain is mostly flat to gently rolling, covered in red forest (ป่าแดง) and dry dipterocarp species — yang and takian thong among them — with streams, small islands of rock, and rapids that keep running with water throughout the year rather than drying up outside the monsoon. That’s a genuine point of difference from many of Isan’s seasonal forest streams.
Trails wind between the tree stands at a walking pace rather than a technical hike — expect birdsong, rustling undergrowth, and the kind of quiet that Isan’s better-known parks (Phu Phra Bat among them) don’t offer once a tour bus arrives. A basic campground is set up on site for anyone wanting to stay overnight; it’s bring-your-own-gear rather than serviced.
Insider Tip: Visit November to February. The dry-season light through the canopy is better for photos, and the lower humidity makes the walk to the rock outcrops and rapids far more comfortable than during the hot season.
Watch out: This is genuinely remote — 120 km from Udon Thani city with limited public transport. Check road conditions and fuel up before heading out, and don’t expect facilities beyond the basic campground.
The park’s contact number connects to the regional DNP office rather than an on-site visitor desk, so calling ahead for current trail or campground conditions is more reliable than turning up unannounced, especially in the rainy season when streams can rise.
