Wat Khae

Wat Khae is bound up with Khun Chang Khun Phaen, one of Thailand’s best-loved folk epics, and that literary heritage shapes everything visitors find here in Suphan Buri. The temple’s most famous resident is an ancient tamarind tree, its gnarled trunk fenced and venerated; in the legend, the warrior-monk Khun Phaen is said to have turned its leaves into a swarm of wasps to scatter his enemies. The temple traces its history back several centuries, and locals know it as much for these stories as for its religious life.

Near the tree stands a striking statue of Phra Ajahn Khong, the master of magic who tutored Khun Phaen in the epic, shown riding a giant wasp. The temple also keeps a set of revered Buddha footprints known as Phra Phutthabat Si Roi, while the main ordination hall shelters its principal Buddha images, where worshippers light incense and kneel to make merit through the day. Smaller shrines and stupas are scattered across peaceful grounds shaded by mature trees.

Despite its fame among Thai visitors, Wat Khae keeps the unhurried rhythm of a working provincial temple. Saffron-robed monks move between the monks’ quarters and the prayer halls, market stalls cluster near the entrance on busy days, and the shade of old trees keeps the compound cool. For many Thais a visit is part pilgrimage, part literary homage — a chance to stand beneath the tamarind that anchors a story every schoolchild knows.

Early morning is the most peaceful time to visit and the best for watching daily temple life. Entry is free, though small donations are welcomed; dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and remove your shoes before entering the halls. The temple sits along Somphan Khong Road in Mueang Suphan Buri and is easily folded into a wider tour of Suphan Buri’s heritage sites. Bring a camera for the tamarind tree and the Phra Ajahn Khong shrine, but always ask permission before photographing monks or worshippers.
