Wat Khao Khun Phanom and Khun Phanom Scientific Study Centre
วัดเขาขุนพนม
Wat Khao Khun Phanom is a hillside Buddhist temple in Ban Ko subdistrict, Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Phrom Khiri district, sharing its grounds with a genuinely separate facility: the Nakhon Si Thammarat Science Center for Education. Both are free to enter, though they keep different hours.
Local tradition places the temple’s founding during the era of the historic Nakhon Si Thammarat kingdom, roughly the 13th to 15th centuries, at the foot of Khao Khun Phanom hill. A well-known local legend holds that King Taksin once stayed here, and the temple still draws Thai visitors specifically for that association alongside its own Buddha images and stupas in southern Thai style. The grounds climb the hillside, so the walk between shrine buildings involves some uphill sections rather than flat temple courtyards.
The science centre is a real, separately-run addition rather than a marketing flourish tacked onto the temple’s name: it occupies a purpose-built exhibition building on roughly two rai of the temple grounds, run by the province’s education office with basic-science displays covering natural history, ecology and astronomy. It’s aimed primarily at Thai school groups — the province runs science camps and teacher-training sessions through the centre — but it’s open to any visitor during its hours. The catch is those hours are narrower than the temple’s: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4pm, so it’s shut on weekends when most leisure travellers would otherwise pass through.
Insider Tip: If seeing the science centre matters to your visit, come on a weekday — the temple itself is worth the trip on any day, but the exhibition building will be locked on Saturdays and Sundays.
Watch out: Don’t plan a special weekend trip around the science centre specifically; you’ll see the temple and hillside views but find the exhibition hall closed.
- Entry fee: Free for both the temple and the science centre
- Science centre hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30am–4pm (closed weekends)
- Location: Ban Ko subdistrict, Phrom Khiri district, at the foot of Khao Khun Phanom hill
- Getting there: By car or motorbike; some uphill walking on the temple grounds
- Good to combine with: Phrom Lok Waterfall, a short nature trail nearby in the same district
Phrom Khiri district’s hillside setting means the temple gets cooler, greener surroundings than the coastal parts of Nakhon Si Thammarat, and it pairs naturally with a stop at Phrom Lok Waterfall if you’re spending a day in this part of the province.
