Wat Khao Tam

Wat Khao Tam is built into a limestone hill about 70 metres high in Ban Pha, just off Highway 1 on the edge of Tak town, founded in 1894. Natural rock formations stack up in irregular layers around the cave entrance, and the temple’s shrines follow the shape of the stone rather than a conventional temple floor plan.

Inside the cave, a replica of the Buddha’s footprint sits alongside an image of Phra Sangkajai, a Guanyin (Chao Mae Kuan Im) statue reflecting the area’s Chinese-Thai devotional traditions, and Luang Pho Than Jai — a stucco Buddha image local tradition says was finished within a single day, which is where its name comes from. The climb up rewards visitors with a genuine panoramic view over Tak and the surrounding plains from the hilltop, shaded in places by the trees around the temple grounds.

Every year, just after Songkran, locals climb the hill for “Khuen Wat Khao Tam,” an almsgiving tradition to mark the new year — worth timing a visit around if you want to see the temple at its most active, or avoiding if you’d rather have the caves to yourself.

Insider Tip: Go early, both for cooler conditions on the climb and better light in the cave shrines — the stone pathways get uncomfortably hot by midday in Tak’s dry season.

Watch out: The paths inside are natural stone, not finished steps in most sections — wear shoes with real grip, especially if it’s rained recently.

Ten to fifteen minutes by car from central Tak, Wat Khao Tam pairs easily with the town’s other sights, including Wat Phra Boromthat and the King Taksin the Great Shrine — Tak has more temple variety than its position on the road to Mae Sot usually gets credit for.

Modest dress and shoes off before entering the shrine areas, as at any Thai temple — and remember this is Tak’s own Wat Khao Tam, not the Koh Phangan retreat centre that shares a similar-sounding name.
