Wat Khaokaew Voraviharn

Wat Khaokaew Voraviharn sits on a small hill above the Pa Sak River in Sao Hai district, Saraburi — not, despite what some listings claim, anywhere near Khao Yai. Entry is free and the grounds are open daily from 08:30 to 16:30.

The temple began as a village monastery in 1628, during the reign of Ayutthaya’s King Songtham. Two centuries later, King Mongkut (Rama IV) stopped his procession at a stone pavilion here on his way to pay respects at Phra Phutthabat and Phra Phutthachai nearby, and was struck by the hill’s setting: a small rise ringed by trees, quiet enough for meditation, overlooking the river below. That royal visit elevated the temple’s status; it now ranks as a third-class royal monastery of the worawihan grade, under the Mahanikai sect.

The temple’s centrepiece is a five-spired prang-style chedi, its form drawing on several artistic traditions layered over the centuries the site has been in use — a much older and more restrained structure than the giant Buddha imagery some outdated write-ups have attached to this page. Climb the hill for the river view rather than a photo backdrop; the setting, not any single monument, is the reason people linger here.

Dress modestly and cover shoulders and knees before heading up, and bring water — there’s shade on the way but little shelter at the summit.

Insider Tip: Pair the visit with Wat Phra Phutthabat Ratchaworamahawihan and Wat Phra Phuttachai, the two sites King Mongkut was travelling to see when he first stopped here. All three sit within a short drive of each other in Saraburi and make a coherent half-day loop.

The temple sits well off the main Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima highway, so a car is the practical way to reach it — there’s no direct public transport link from central Saraburi town.
