Wat Phra Phuttachai

A roughly 5-metre reddish silhouette of a standing Buddha, gilded and hazy against the rock, marks the cliff face at Wat Phra Phuttachai, in Nong Pla Lai subdistrict at the foot of Khao Pathawee, Mueang Saraburi district. Entry is free, daily from 07:00 to 17:00.

The mark gives the temple its name: Phuttachai means “Buddha’s shadow,” not a footprint, though the two get confused often since Saraburi is also home to the nationally famous Wat Phra Phutthabat footprint temple in a different district. Local legend holds that the Buddha created the shadow on the cliff at the request of a reformed hunter named Kataga, who wanted something to venerate after the Buddha moved on and left him to spread the teaching in the area. The temple itself dates to the reign of King Songtham of Ayutthaya in the early 17th century, making it more than 400 years old.

A Naga-flanked staircase climbs from the temple grounds to the mondop that shelters the shadow, shaded by stands of large old trees that keep the foothill noticeably cooler than the open plain below. Alongside the shadow shrine sits a modern replica of a Buddha footprint, and faint prehistoric line drawings survive on nearby cliff faces — rock art thought to date back some 3,000 years, a reminder this hill was a landmark long before the temple existed.

Insider Tip: Climb higher past the main mondop for a clear view over the villages and low mountain ranges around Khao Pathawee — most visitors stop at the shadow shrine and never continue up.

Watch out: Wild macaques live around the grounds and cliff staircase. Keep food out of sight and hold onto cameras, phones, and sunglasses — the monkeys here are used to snatching from visitors.

Reach the temple off Phahon Yothin Road on the western edge of Saraburi town, a short drive from central Saraburi. If you want the footprint version of this story, Wat Phra Phutthabat Ratchaworamahawihan — Saraburi’s nationally famous pilgrimage temple — sits in a different district entirely, so budget separate trips for the two. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and remove shoes before entering the mondop.
