Wat Lai Hin

Wat Lai Hin — officially Wat Sela Rattana Papphataram, known locally as Wat Lai Hin Luang — sits in Ko Kha district, about 30km south of central Lampang. The Fine Arts Department listed it as a registered ancient monument in 1980, protecting the open-air viharn, the chedi behind it, the ordination hall, the gateway arch, and the dhamma hall. Entry is free and the grounds stay open daily from 07:30 to 17:00.

The architecture is textbook Lanna: a low, open-sided viharn with a heavily tiered roofline, its gables and eaves carved rather than painted, standing over a raked sand courtyard used for temple ceremonies and merit-making. Palm-leaf manuscripts kept on site attest to centuries of continuous use and restoration, and the chedi standing behind the main hall is believed locally to house Buddhist relics — a standard Lanna layout, but one preserved here with less renovation-driven polish than at Lampang’s better-known temples. The wooden columns and roof structure show real age: worn grain, hand-adzed joints, the kind of detail that gets sanded away at more heavily restored sites.

Insider Tip: Wat Lai Hin gets a fraction of the visitors that Wat Phra That Lampang Luang does, 20km away — if you want unhurried photographs of Lanna wooden architecture without other tourists in frame, come here first and save the marquee temple for later in the day.

This remains a working monastery, not a heritage-park exhibit. Monks live and study on the grounds, morning and evening prayer sessions happen on their own schedule, and local families visit to make merit rather than to pose for photos. That working character is the honest appeal — it’s quieter and less staged than temples further along the standard Lampang tourist route.

Watch out: Songthaew routes toward Ko Kha don’t stop directly at the temple gate. Without your own transport, budget extra time and confirm with the driver that they’ll detour to Wat Lai Hin specifically, or arrange a taxi round-trip from Lampang.

Dress modestly — covered shoulders and knees — and remove your shoes before stepping into the viharn or ordination hall. Small bills are useful if you want to make a donation; there’s no card facility here.
