Wat Nong Phluang

Wat Nong Phluang’s reason to visit is its ordination hall — a boat-hull-style ubosot (bot thong sampao) dating to the late Ayutthaya through early Rattanakosin period, roughly the 18th to early 19th century. It sits in Ban Nong Phluang, Nong Kha Yang subdistrict, Uthai Thani province, next to Nong Kha Yang Witthayakhom School. Entry is free, and there are no posted opening hours — it’s a working village monastery, not a managed attraction.

The ubosot’s foundation curves upward at both ends in the classic “ship’s hull” profile that late-Ayutthaya builders used to counter ground subsidence — a construction detail more common in Central Thailand than the north, despite what older versions of this listing claimed. Brick and mortar make up the structure, under a gabled roof. The front gable carries stucco relief patterns inlaid with pieces of glazed ceramic, while the rear is left plain, whitewashed stucco with no ornamentation. There’s a single entrance door, and — unusually for a Thai temple roof — no chofa, the bird-beak finial that tops most ordination halls. The building is presumed to be the work of local craftsmen rather than court artisans, which shows in its restrained, unpolished style: simple rather than showy, but well preserved for its age.

Insider Tip: Walk the full length of the ubosot’s base before going inside — the curved, boat-hull foundation is the single most distinctive feature here, and it’s easy to miss if you head straight for the entrance.

Dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering. Public transport options to Nong Kha Yang are limited, so a car or motorbike from Uthai Thani town is the practical way in — worth combining with Wat Uposatharam or Wat Tham Khao Wong if you’re touring the province’s older temples in one trip.
