Wat Thammakosok
วัดธรรมโฆษก (วัดโรงโค)
Wat Thammakosok sits in Uthai Mai subdistrict, a short ride from central Uthai Thani town, and its real draw is inside the ordination hall rather than out front — a set of interior murals rated among the finest in the province. Entry is free, and the temple opens daily from 08:00 to 16:30.
Most first-time visitors expect a grand exterior and are surprised the building itself is modest; the payoff is inside. The ubosot’s walls carry paintings believed to date from the transition between the late Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin periods, showing the Buddha’s descent from Tavatimsa heaven on one wall and his temptation by Mara on another, with rows of celestial figures alternating with painted fans along the side panels. Stucco relief work frames the exterior window openings, a detail easy to miss if you don’t look up on your way in. None of this is roped off or lit for tourists — a monk or temple volunteer will usually let you in and switch on the hall lights if you ask.
The temple’s older name, Wat Rong Kho (“cattle-shed temple”), points to a working past that had nothing to do with worship: the grounds once served as a slaughter site before the community built a full temple here. Local histories also describe Uthai Thani officials once swearing oaths of loyalty at the site using consecrated water — a ceremony with real legal standing under the old provincial system, not a symbolic gesture. Both threads of history sit oddly against the calm the grounds have today, which is worth knowing before you go looking for grandeur and find a modest riverside temple instead.
Insider Tip: Ask whoever’s around to unlock the ordination hall rather than assuming it’s open — the murals are the entire point of a visit, and they’re only visible with the doors open and lights on.
Morning is the best time to come, both for the light inside the ubosot and because the grounds are otherwise unremarkable outside the ordination hall — there’s no need to build a full day around this stop. Pair it with the Local History and Cultural Museum of Uthai Thani Province, a few minutes away, or Ancient Uthaithani if you’re spending a full day around the province’s history sites.
