Wat Paphruek Fish Sanctuary sits on the Tha Chin River in Ban Laem subdistrict, Bang Pla Ma district — this is Suphan Buri, not Kanchanaburi, despite what older listings for this page have said. The temple itself was originally called Wat Wihan Lai Thong before being renamed after the local village in 1916, and its main appeal for visitors is what happens on the riverbank in front of it rather than inside the ordination hall.

Large numbers of sawai catfish and tilapia gather along the bank here, drawn by decades of feeding by temple visitors and locals — the fish are used to people and surface readily when food hits the water. It’s a genuine local tradition rather than a manufactured attraction: Thai-style houses line the river nearby, and alms-giving ceremonies to monks are sometimes held out on the water itself rather than on land.

Neither is a major pilgrimage draw on its own, but they give the temple a history that predates the fish-feeding tradition by a considerable margin.

Watch out: December is the liveliest time to visit, when the community holds long-boat races and a local custom called Chak Phra Len Phleng — pulling a Buddha image along the river accompanied by music — but it depends on water levels being right that year, so it isn’t a fixed annual date you can plan a trip around with certainty.
