Wat Pha Nam Thip Thep Prasit Wanaram

Wat Pha Nam Thip Thep Prasit Wanaram is a forest temple on a sandstone ridge in Nong Phok district, Roi Et — the monastery that grew up around the site where the monk Phra Ajahn Sri Mahawiro is said to have first come to meditate in the early 1950s. Entry is free and the grounds are open daily, roughly 06:00 to 17:30. Most visitors come for one specific reason: the towering gold-spired chedi that dominates the site, but the temple itself is older and quieter than that one landmark suggests.

The temple buildings sit at the base of the ridge rather than up on it — an ordination hall, monks’ quarters, and a scatter of smaller shrine pavilions shaded by mature trees. It’s the Phra Maha Chedi Chai Mongkhon that most people photograph and climb, a gold-topped chedi reaching about 109 metres including its spire, with an internal museum of Buddhist artefacts and a staircase up to views over the surrounding rice plains — that structure gets its own page here because there’s enough to say about it on its own. The temple grounds around it are calmer: local families come to make merit rather than sightsee, and on an ordinary weekday you’ll likely have the shaded courtyard largely to yourself outside of the chedi’s steady trickle of visitors.

Because the site sits on a forested ridge rather than flat ground, the wider mountain around the temple — trails, viewpoints, springs seeping from the sandstone — is covered as its own attraction, Pha Nam Yoi (Isan Buddhist Park). Between the two, a visit here can be as short as a stop at the chedi or as long as an afternoon on the ridge trails, depending on how much time you budget.

Insider Tip: If your time is limited, prioritise the chedi over the temple’s own buildings — it’s the more photogenic stop and the one with an actual museum inside, while the temple grounds are best appreciated slowly rather than rushed.

Watch out: This is rural Isan, well off the standard tourist circuit — there’s no English signage on site, and public transport doesn’t reach the temple, so you’ll need your own car, a motorbike, or a hired driver from Roi Et town.

Dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees, and remove shoes before entering any building. The drive out from Roi Et town takes well over an hour on rural roads, so it’s worth combining the trip with nearby stops — Tham Soda Waterfall and the Pha Nam Thip wildlife reserve are both in the same corner of Nong Phok district — rather than making the round trip just for the temple alone.
