Wat Phra That Doi Noi

Wat Phra That Doi Noi sits on a single hill in Doi Lo district, south of Chiang Mai city, with views over the Ping River valley below. It’s one of several Chiang Mai-area temples that share a “Doi Noi” (“little hill”) name with unrelated sites elsewhere in the north — this one is specifically the Doi Lo hilltop temple, not the Doi Noi shrines found near other districts or in neighbouring provinces.

Local tradition ties the temple’s founding to Queen Chamadevi, the legendary founder of the Hariphunchai kingdom centred on nearby Lamphun — a lineage claimed by several old temples across this part of the north, since Chamadevi’s story is woven through much of the region’s early Buddhist history. The exact founding date isn’t well documented beyond that tradition, so treat the connection as local lore rather than settled fact. The temple grounds include a gilded chedi visible from a distance, a vihara housing the main Buddha image, and a shrine to Chamadevi herself, reflecting that local association.

It’s a low-key site by Chiang Mai standards: no entry queue, no gift-shop strip, and few visitors outside the temple’s own community and the occasional passer-through touring Doi Lo and Sanpatong. That’s the draw for anyone who’s already ticked off Wat Phra Singh and Doi Suthep and wants a genuinely local temple experience rather than a second helping of the same crowds.

Insider Tip: The hilltop position means the Ping River valley view is the real reason to make the drive — time your visit for late afternoon when the light across the valley is at its best, and skip it entirely if low cloud or rain has closed in, since the view is the whole point.

Watch out: The final stretch up the hill can be steep and, after rain, slippery — take it slowly on a motorbike, and note the site doesn’t have paved viewpoint railings everywhere.
