Wat Phrathat Khao Noi

Wat Phrathat Khao Noi sits on a hilltop about 240 metres above sea level, roughly 90 metres above Nan town itself, 4km from the old city. Entry is free, daily around 06:00-18:00, reached by 303 naga-staircase steps or a paved road that runs straight to the top for anyone who’d rather not climb.

The temple dates to 1487, built during the era of Nan’s own ruling dynasty before it came fully under Lanna and later Siamese control, and the hilltop chedi is still treated as housing sacred relics under local tradition. Its best-known feature today is more recent: a 9-metre standing Buddha, Phra Buddha Maha Udomonkol Nantaburi Sri Nan, wearing a gilded crown and facing out over the town. It was erected in 1999 to mark the King’s birthday and has become the temple’s defining image, visible from parts of Nan town below on a clear day.

The viewpoint terrace beside the Buddha image is the real draw for most visitors — an unbroken sweep over Nan’s grid of temple roofs and the Nan River valley, ringed by mountains on every side. Sunrise in the cool season (November-February) can bring a genuine sea of mist filling the valley floor, while late afternoon visits trade the mist for cooler stair-climbing weather and softer light over the town. Either way it’s a working temple as much as a viewpoint — monks are based on site, and morning almsgiving and chanting continue regardless of how many visitors are on the terrace.

Insider Tip: Drive up if you’re short on time or visiting at sunrise before your legs have warmed up — the 303-step staircase is manageable but adds 15-20 minutes each way that the road bypasses entirely.

Watch out: The viewpoint gets breezy and exposed at the top; bring a layer even in hot season, since temperatures drop noticeably once you’re clear of the tree cover partway up the stairs.

Pair it with the sights in Nan’s old town below — Wat Phumin for its famous murals and the National Museum of Nan for provincial history make an easy half-day combined with the hilltop view. Wear modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, and bring water for the climb if you’re skipping the road option.
