Wat Satsana Chotikaram

Wat Satsana Chotikaram is better known locally as Wat Pa Fang, in Phra Bat subdistrict on the edge of Lampang’s old town. A Burmese couple working in the local teak trade, Pho Tao U Suay Attha and Mae Tao Kham Wan, founded it in 1892; the temple received formal royal consecration of its ordination boundary in 1906, the same year a gilded chedi was built to enshrine Buddhist relics brought over from Myanmar. That Burmese connection — Lampang’s teak industry drew Burmese and Shan workers and financiers through the late 19th century — shapes everything about how the temple looks today.

The wooden vihara carries layered, tiered roofs in the Burmese style rather than the northern Thai Lanna forms found at most other Lampang temples, and the small ordination hall is decorated with carved wood in matching Burmese patterns. Inside, a revered Buddha image is dressed in a robe set with rubies said to have come from Burma — a detail temple visitors and local guides point to as unusual even by the standards of Lampang’s Burmese-influenced temples. A natural spring on the grounds, referred to as a sacred water well, draws visitors who come to collect water for blessings alongside their prayers.

As a working monastery rather than a museum piece, the pace here is set by the resident monks — morning chanting, visitors making merit, incense smoke drifting through the compound — rather than by tour groups.

Insider Tip: Pair the visit with Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, Lampang’s best-known temple complex, a short drive away — the contrast between Lanna and Burmese temple styles is easier to see back-to-back.

Watch out: This is an active place of worship, not a tourist site — dress with shoulders and knees covered and remove shoes before entering any building.
