Wat Udom Khongkha Khiri Khet

Wat Udom Khongkha Khiri Khet — known locally as Wat Doon — sits in forested hill country near Phu Phad Daeng in Khon Kaen’s Mancha Khiri district, roughly an hour’s drive southwest of Khon Kaen city. The monk Luang Pu Pang settled here in 1950 at the invitation of local villagers; the temple’s name translates roughly as “a place abundant with water, bordered by mountains,” a nod to the natural spring (“doon” in the local Isan dialect) that gave the site its everyday name. Entry is free, open daily 08:00-17:00.

What’s Here

The Chaimongkol Stupa is the complex’s centerpiece — a substantial structure roughly 28 metres tall with a 100-metre circumference, floored in black granite imported from Italy and crowned in gold mosaic, housing reliquaries and Buddha images inside. Luang Pu Pang’s own relics are enshrined at the temple; he’s remembered as one of the more significant forest-tradition monks associated with this part of Khon Kaen, and a steady stream of local devotees still comes to pay respects. About a kilometre from the main temple grounds, Khong Kewian Cave held particular significance for Luang Pu Pang’s own meditation practice during his time here.

Beyond the stupa, the grounds include the ordination hall, a bell tower, and a scattering of shrine pavilions set among forest rather than manicured gardens — the hilly, wooded setting is as much the point of a visit as any single structure.

This is a working forest temple, not a curated tourist stop — expect quiet, uneven ground, and limited signage in English. Morning is cooler and coincides with any resident monks’ daily routine; shade is inconsistent once you’re away from the tree line, so a hat and water are worth carrying.
