Chang Kra Wild Orchids, Wat Pa Mancha Khiri
อุทยานกล้วยไม้ช้างกระ วัดป่ามัญจาคีรี
Chang Kra Wild Orchids is a stand of roughly 280 century-old trees inside the grounds of Wat Pa Mancha Khiri, on which more than 4,000 clusters of wild Chang Kra orchid (Rhynchostylis gigantea, a foxtail orchid) grow unplanted. Flower spikes start forming in December, with the dense, pink-spotted sprays fully out from January into February — once a year, and only during those two months. Entry is free, daily 08:00-17:00.
Wooden walkways lead visitors through the grove without stepping off the forest floor onto tree roots. The orchids cascade from the bark of the host trees rather than growing in pots or beds — this is naturally occurring, not a cultivated display, which is what makes the concentration unusual enough that locals call it the only site of its kind in the country. Monks at the temple maintain the grounds but don’t tend the orchids as a garden crop the way a nursery would; the plants are left to grow as they’ve established themselves over generations on the old trees. Information signage around the walkways identifies the orchid variety and its growing habits.
Outside the January-February bloom, the site is a quiet forest temple with green, flowerless host trees — worth a stop only if you’re already in the area for other reasons. During bloom weeks it draws local and regional day-trippers, and mornings are noticeably cooler and better for photographing the flower spikes before the midday heat sets in.
Insider Tip: Check the year’s bloom timing before travelling out here specifically — orchid flowering shifts by a couple of weeks year to year depending on the cool-season temperatures, so a mid-December visit can still be a week or two early.
Watch out: This is a working temple, not a botanical park — there’s no ticket booth, shop, or facilities to speak of. Bring your own water, and dress and behave as you would at any Wat (shoulders covered, quiet voice near the viharn).
