Wat Wieng Kham

Wat Wieng Kham sits in Ban Terd Thai, Tambon Mae Salong Nai, in the Doi Mae Salong hills of Mae Fa Luang district. Locally it’s often called Wat Ga Khao — “White Crow Temple” — after a legend that white crows once gathered on this hillside, taken as a sign the land was suited to spiritual practice and shared by the area’s various hill-tribe communities regardless of faith.

The temple’s centrepiece is a large bronze Buddha image, Phra Chai Rattana Phlung Phaen Din, built between 2004 and 2006. It’s worth being clear-eyed about the timeline: despite the name’s ancient-sounding legend, the image and the temple structures around it are recent additions, not a historic relic — the “White Crow Land” story is the old part, the built temple is not. That doesn’t diminish the site; it’s simply a newer landmark built to anchor a much older local legend, and it draws a genuine local following from the surrounding Akha, Lahu, and Yunnanese Chinese communities that make up this stretch of the Mae Salong hills.

Doi Mae Salong itself is worth the trip regardless of the temple — a former KMT settlement turned tea-growing hill town, with views toward the Myanmar border on clear days. Wat Wieng Kham fits naturally into a half-day loop around the area rather than standing as a destination on its own.

Insider Tip: Combine the temple with Phra That Chedi Srinagarindra Sathit Maha Santikhiri, the white pagoda that’s Doi Mae Salong’s best-known landmark — the two sit within the same hill area and give a fuller picture of the region’s mixed religious and cultural history than either does alone.

Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and remove your shoes before entering any building. Mornings here are noticeably cool year-round given the elevation, so bring a layer if you’re arriving early.
