Thailand counts down twice over on 31 December. In the cities and beach resorts there are free concerts, mall countdowns and midnight fireworks, and at the temples people chant their way through midnight. Most of it costs nothing to watch. The money goes on where you sleep, so choose the place first.

Quick answer: where should you go? Bangkok for the biggest show, with free river fireworks at ICONSIAM and cruises from about 5,000 THB. Chiang Mai’s CAD countdown if you want sky lanterns, from 6,373 THB. Patong or Pattaya for a free concert on the sand. Stay away from Koh Samui if rain would ruin it.

Key Facts:
  • Date: Thursday 31 December 2026, then a public holiday on Friday 1 January 2027
  • Biggest free countdowns: CentralWorld and ICONSIAM in Bangkok, Patong Beach, Pattaya Central Beach
  • Sky lanterns: CAD in Mae On, Chiang Mai, ticketed only
  • 2026 line-ups: mostly announced in December
  • Book first: your room, then flights, then anything with a ticket
  • Watch for: compulsory gala dinners and minimum stays at resorts

Countdowns Compared

Dates for the free events are from the New Year 2026 countdowns, because most 2026 programmes aren’t out yet. Ticket prices were checked 31 October 2026 for one adult.

Bangkok

Bangkok is the default for a reason: two huge free events, trains running late and hotels at every price. The CentralWorld countdown draws the biggest crowd, and ICONSIAM’s show stretched about 1.4 km along the Chao Phraya last year.

Six river cruises are on sale, from about 5,000 THB, and our Bangkok guide compares each one. It also covers the road closures and last trains, which matter more than the line-up. Roads around CentralWorld shut from the afternoon, so sleep within walking distance of your show.

Chiang Mai

This is the one New Year in Thailand that looks like nowhere else. At the CAD New Year Countdown in Mae On, lanterns go up shortly before midnight and fireworks follow. Tickets include a Thai buffet, two lanterns and a shuttle from a meeting point in town.

Tickets cost from 6,373 THB on Viator, non-refundable, or about US$262 on GetYourGuide with a full refund up to 24 hours before. You can skip all of that and join the free crowd at Tha Phae Gate in the Old City, but there’s no mass release there.

For the opposite of a party, the 6-day New Year silent retreat runs from 28 December to 2 January in the Mae On countryside.

Phuket

Patong Countdown is the big free event: three nights on the sand (29 to 31 December last year), Thai bands every evening and a fireworks display at midnight on the last night, with more than 300 drones for New Year 2026. Bangla Road carries on until sunrise.

Central Phuket Floresta runs a second countdown at the Phuket Outdoor Arena, which is the closest big show to Phuket Town. The Old Town gets lit up for the season but has no organised countdown. On the west coast beaches, midnight fireworks mostly come from beach clubs and resorts, so what you see depends on who’s next door.

This is where the compulsory gala dinner bites hardest. Ask what your resort charges for 31 December before comparing rates. Holiday Inn Resort Phuket sits across the road from Patong Beach, or search Patong for these dates. Our Phuket guide helps you pick a beach.

Pattaya

Pattaya Countdown filled Central Beach for three nights last year (29 to 31 December), with free concerts and fireworks over the Gulf of Thailand at midnight. It’s two hours or so from Bangkok by road, which makes it the easiest beach New Year if you land late in December.

Hilton Pattaya stands above Central Pattaya with views over the bay, or search Pattaya for these dates. Our Pattaya guide covers the rest of the trip.

Koh Phangan and Koh Samui

Haad Rin on Koh Phangan holds a New Year countdown party on 31 December. It isn’t a full moon night in 2026: that party is on 24 December, and our Full Moon guide has the dates. Boats and rooms get tight in the last week of December, so sort the ferry before the bed.

Koh Samui has no single show to match Patong’s, but Chaweng comes closest. Fireworks go up over Chaweng Bay at midnight, ARKbar’s countdown festival on the sand costs 500 THB to get in, with gates at 5pm, and the Central Samui mall has run a free countdown with live music in past years. Elsewhere it’s resort gala dinners. Rain is the catch: the Gulf coast’s wet season can run into December, while Phuket’s coast is in its dry season. Check the villas on Samui if you’re a group, because a private pool and a chef take the pressure off a wet evening. For a quieter week, the New Year yoga retreat at Vikasa runs from 29 December to 3 January, with a fire ceremony at midnight.

Krabi

Ao Nang is a quieter option than Patong, and the standout here is a boat. A New Year’s Eve cruise from Ao Nang runs for four hours with a DJ, champagne and oysters from about US$208, with pickup in Ao Nang and a full refund up to 24 hours before. Our Krabi guide covers where to stay.

Hat Yai and Korat

Two regional cities throw big countdowns for Thai crowds. Central Festival Hat Yai ran three nights of free concerts with Thai artists last year, and Nakhon Ratchasima brought a travelling fairground and full-scale concerts to the Provincial Hall. Neither is a reason to fly to Thailand, but both are good news if you’re already nearby.

Thai visitors also pack the cool-season towns over New Year. Chiang Khan on the Mekong is a favourite, and rooms there go early.

Temples at Midnight

Many Thais see in the year at a temple, chanting suat mon kham pi from late evening until after midnight. Visitors are welcome at most temples if they dress for it, with shoulders and knees covered. Wat Pho in Bangkok has hosted a public ceremony in recent years, and it’s the most meaningful way to spend the night in Thailand if fireworks aren’t the point.

Planning Tips

  • Book the room first. New Year sits in the middle of peak season, and the rooms near each show are the first to go.
  • Read the resort terms. Look for a compulsory gala dinner and a minimum stay before you compare prices.
  • Fix transport early. Flights, ferries and buses all fill in the last week of December. Our flights guide and getting around guide cover the options.
  • Stay off the roads. The days around New Year are the worst of the year on Thai roads. Don’t ride a scooter home on New Year’s Eve.
  • Carry cash. Keep small notes for food stalls and tuk-tuks at the free events.

Safety Tip: Crowds at the big countdowns get tight around midnight. Agree a meeting point before you go in, because phone signal drops when tens of thousands of people are in one square.

Christmas falls a week earlier, and Christmas in Thailand covers it. The events calendar shows what else is on in December.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to spend New Year's Eve in Thailand?
Bangkok has the biggest countdowns and the river fireworks, free to watch. Chiang Mai has the CAD sky lantern release, which is ticketed. For a beach, Patong in Phuket and Central Beach in Pattaya have both run free three-night countdowns with concerts and midnight fireworks.
Is New Year's Eve a public holiday in Thailand?
New Year's Day is. 31 December is often declared a government holiday too, and 1 January 2027 falls on a Friday, so expect Thais travelling for a long weekend as well as the foreign high season.
Are New Year countdowns in Thailand free?
Most are. CentralWorld, ICONSIAM, Patong Beach, Pattaya Central Beach and Central Festival Hat Yai have all been free to attend. You pay for cruises, rooftops, resort gala dinners, beach clubs and the CAD lantern event, where tickets start at 6,373 THB.
Can I release sky lanterns on New Year's Eve in Thailand?
Only at an organised event. In Chiang Mai that means the CAD New Year Countdown in Mae On, with two lanterns on each ticket. Unlicensed lanterns are banned in Chiang Mai city.
Is there a Full Moon Party on New Year's Eve?
Haad Rin on Koh Phangan holds a New Year countdown party on 31 December, but 31 December 2026 is not a full moon. The December full moon party falls on 24 December.
Do hotels charge extra on New Year's Eve in Thailand?
Often. Many beach resorts add a compulsory gala dinner to the 31 December rate, and many set a minimum stay. Check for both in the room terms before you compare prices.
What is the weather like in Thailand at New Year?
Dry and warm on the Andaman coast in Phuket and Krabi, dry and cooler in Bangkok, and cool at night in Chiang Mai. Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are the risk, because the Gulf coast's rainy season can run into December.
