IconSiam is a 750,000 sqm riverside complex on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya, across the river from Bangkok’s main shopping districts, and one of the city’s most-visited attractions since it opened in 2018. Entry is free — you’re paying for what you eat, buy, or book once inside — and it’s open daily from 10:00 to 22:00.

Experience

The ground-floor SookSiam zone is the reason to make the trip even if you have no shopping to do. It recreates a Thai floating market indoors, with wooden boats floating along a real water channel, canal-side stalls, and food vendors from all 77 Thai provinces — Isaan som tum next to southern-style roti, northern khao soi a few stalls down. It’s touristy by design, but the food is genuinely good and the market layout gives you a compressed tour of regional Thai cooking in one afternoon.

Upstairs, IconSiam and the connected IconLuxe wing hold department stores (Siam Takashimaya, a seven-floor Japanese import) and Thailand’s first Apple Store, plus the country’s densest concentration of international luxury flagships — Louis Vuitton, Dior, Cartier, and dozens more sit alongside mid-range Thai and international fashion. Don’t expect bargains; this side of the mall is priced for the label, not the local market.

The 4th and 5th floors are worth a slower look even if luxury retail isn’t your thing. ICONCRAFT gathers work from more than 300 Thai artisans across roughly 2,500 sqm — textiles, ceramics, jewellery, and home decor that reads as a curated craft market rather than a souvenir shelf, and it’s a better source for a genuine gift than anything at the airport.

Atmosphere & Timing

The riverfront terrace runs a free multimedia water and light show most evenings, with jets reaching up to 35 metres along a 400-metre stretch of river — one of the longest fountain installations in Southeast Asia. Shows typically run twice a night, roughly 19:00 and 20:00, though exact timing shifts around holidays. Arrive 20-30 minutes early for terrace space; the crowd thickens fast once the lights come on, especially on weekends.

Weekday mornings and early afternoons are the quiet window if you’d rather browse SookSiam without fighting for table space. By early evening the ground floor fills with both tourists arriving for the fountain show and locals stopping for dinner.

Insider Tip: Take the free IconSiam shuttle boat from BTS Saphan Taksin (Sathorn Pier) rather than a taxi — it runs every 10-15 minutes, takes about 10 minutes to cross, and the river view is part of the experience.

Watch out: The fountain show is outdoors and gets cancelled or shortened in heavy rain, which is common during the June-October wet season. Check the schedule that day rather than planning your whole evening around it.

Practical

IconSiam sits in Khlong San district on the Thonburi side of the river — there’s no direct BTS or MRT stop at the building itself, so the shuttle boat from Saphan Taksin is the standard route for visitors without a car. Paid parking is available on-site for anyone driving over via the Rama VIII or Taksin bridges. If you’re already riverside, the Chao Phraya Express Boat continues north past Wat Arun or south toward Asiatique The Riverfront — both make an easy add-on to the same evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IconSiam free to enter?
Yes — there's no admission charge. It's a shopping and dining complex, not a ticketed attraction; you only pay for what you eat, buy, or book (like the SookSiam boat rides).
How do you get to IconSiam without a car?
The easiest route is the free IconSiam shuttle boat from Sathorn (Saphan Taksin) pier, reachable by BTS Skytrain. Boats run every 10-15 minutes and the crossing takes about 10 minutes. A paid Chao Phraya Express Boat also stops at the IconSiam pier.
What is SookSiam?
SookSiam is the ground-floor zone built to look like a Thai floating market — wooden boats, canal-side stalls, and food vendors representing all 77 Thai provinces, serving regional dishes from Isaan som tam to southern-style roti.
What time is the water and light show?
The free multimedia fountain show runs on the riverfront terrace most evenings, typically around 19:00 and again around 20:00. Times shift for holidays and special events, so check IconSiam's site the day of your visit.
Is IconSiam worth visiting if you're not shopping for luxury brands?
Yes — SookSiam's food and market floor, the river views, and the free fountain show are worth the trip on their own, even if you skip the department stores entirely.
