Christmas in Thailand is a normal working day with a lot of tinsel. Friday 25 December 2026 isn’t a public holiday, and only about 1% of Thais are Christian. Malls and hotels decorate anyway, the beaches are at their warmest and driest, and in one Catholic village in the northeast the whole community builds giant stars.

Quick answer: for a warm Christmas, go to Phuket or Krabi, where the Andaman coast is in its dry season. For lights, dinners and church, go to Bangkok. To see Thais celebrating Christmas, go to Tha Rae in Sakon Nakhon for the star parade. Whichever you pick, book soon, because this is the start of the most expensive fortnight of the Thai year.

Key Facts:
  • Public holiday: no. Banks, shops and offices open as normal on 24 and 25 December
  • Christmas Day 2026: a Friday
  • Peak prices: from around 20 December until after New Year
  • Best weather: Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak) and Bangkok
  • Most Christmassy place: Tha Rae, Sakon Nakhon
  • Nearby dates: Full Moon Party on 24 December, New Year’s Eve a week later

The Tha Rae Star Parade

This is Thailand’s own Christmas, and few foreign visitors see it. Tha Rae, on the shore of Nong Han lake outside Sakon Nakhon, has the largest Catholic community in the country, founded in 1884 by Vietnamese Catholic families and a French missionary. Every December, households hang lit stars outside their homes and neighbourhoods build huge illuminated floats.

The 2025 festival ran from 20 to 24 December, with the grand parade and opening ceremony on 23 December from 6pm. The Tourism Authority of Thailand made it one of its Signature Events that year. It’s free, and the stalls selling food along the route take cash.

To get there, fly from Don Mueang to Sakon Nakhon in about 1 hour 10 minutes on Nok Air or Thai AirAsia, then drive 21 km to Tha Rae. Book the flight early, because it’s a small airport. Hotel Le Naga in central Sakon Nakhon has a pool, and NK Residence has 30 sqm rooms on Nitayo Road.

Christmas in Bangkok

Bangkok does Christmas the way it does everything, in its malls. Central Embassy, ICONSIAM, CentralWorld and One Bangkok all put up trees and light tunnels through December, free to wander. Stay at Centara Grand at CentralWorld and you’re inside the CentralWorld complex.

Christmas Markets

Most Bangkok markets are charity fairs that last a single day, run by schools and expat groups. Don’t expect a month of wooden huts.

Church Services

Assumption Cathedral in Bang Rak is the main Catholic church, and its grounds hosted a Christmas Eve market in recent years. For masses in English, Holy Redeemer on Soi Ruam Rudee is the first choice. Christ Church on Convent Road is the city’s Anglican church, and last year it also hosted a Nordic Christmas Eve service. Filipino Catholics fill Holy Redeemer for Simbang Gabi, nine dawn masses that began on 16 December last year.

Santa Cruz in Kudi Chin and Holy Rosary, known as Kalawar, are the old riverside churches, built by Portuguese communities, and both are worth seeing at any time of year. Parishes publish their 2026 times in December.

Christmas Dinner

Hotels run most of Thailand’s Christmas dinners, and few are sold through our partners. These two are, checked 31 October for one adult.

In Bangkok, a Chao Phraya dinner cruise is a good alternative to a hotel ballroom, and it runs year-round. Book your hotel dinner when you book the room. Beach resorts often add a Christmas Eve gala to the room rate, so check the terms before you compare prices.

A Beach Christmas

Phuket is the easy choice, especially with children. Holiday Inn Resort Phuket sits across the road from Patong Beach with four pools and a supervised kids’ club. Groups and families should look at Phuket villas or Koh Samui villas, where a private pool and a chef make Christmas lunch your own affair. Villa dates go first, so ask early.

Koh Samui needs a warning. The Gulf coast’s rainy season can run into December, while Phuket and Krabi are in their dry season. If a week of sun is the point of the trip, book the Andaman side.

Missing the cold? Frost Magical Ice of Siam in Pattaya is an indoor ice park, from about US$21.

Parties and Festivals Around Christmas

December is a busy month for events, and several land close to Christmas.

Planning Tips

  • Book now. Flights and beach hotels climb from around 20 December. Our Thailand flights guide covers routes from the UK, Europe, Australia and the US.
  • Don’t assume anything is closed. Banks, pharmacies and shops keep normal hours on 25 December.
  • Don’t assume anything is special either. Outside hotels and malls, 25 December looks like any other Friday. Book a dinner if you want one.
  • Pack by region. Take a warm layer for Chiang Mai nights and Tha Rae, and swimwear for everywhere else.

Insider Tip: Christmas and New Year in one trip works well if you fly in around 20 December, go to the beach first, then spend New Year in Bangkok or Chiang Mai. Domestic flights fill up, so book both legs together.
