This eight-to-nine-hour speedboat trip opens at Green Island for an hour of snorkelling before running south to Maya Bay, the cliff-ringed bay used in “The Beach”. The stop there runs about 40 minutes; the bay closes every August and September to protect young reef sharks, so expect a different route if you’re travelling then. Buffet lunch follows at a beachside restaurant on Phi Phi Don — halal options are available — with free time on the sand afterwards.

The afternoon leg covers Loh Samah Bay, a snorkelling stop on the sheltered side of Koh Phi Phi Leh opposite Maya Bay, then a slow pass by Viking Cave — the cave entrance itself is closed to visitors, but the boat cruises past the swiftlet-nest cliffs. The day wraps at Monkey Beach, where a resident troop of long-tailed macaques works the shoreline. Groups run up to 15 people with an English-speaking guide, and tea and coffee are served on board.

Snorkelling gear and life jackets are provided; the 400 THB national park fee (200 THB for children) is paid on the day and isn’t included in the $51 fare. Bring a photo of your passport’s information page — it’s needed for the trip insurance. Optional extras like jet skiing and banana boat rides at Phi Phi Don cost more on top.

Our next stop will be at Loh Samah Bay is in the southern part of Koh Phi Phi Leh island. It is precisely on the opposite side of Maya Bay. The location is one of the most spectacular snorkelling sites on Koh Phi Phi Leh, the second-largest island of the Koh Phi Phi archipelago. Loh Samah can be easily reached by boat and usually serves as one of the stops during a day trip to Phi Phi islands.

5

After a while, we will arrive at Viking Cave, one of the most notable sites on Koh Phi Phi Leh. Visiting Viking Cave also allows you to discover one of the most profitable local industries: the hunting/harvesting of swiftlet birds’ nests. Particularly prized in Chinese culture, these edible nests are believed to promote good health and are specifically suitable for the skin. Entrance inside of the cave is now closed for visitors but we will pass by on our tour.

6

If there is one thing that makes the holidays even more exciting, it is the guarantee that there will be cute animals to play with. Fortunately, that is no problem on Monkey Beach in Koh Phi Phi, where the monkeys live freely. This location has everything you expect from it: beautiful, warm, and cheeky! Long-tailed macaque troops own the beach, for real.
