Phi Phi Don Island
เกาะพีพีดอน
Phi Phi Don is the largest island in the Phi Phi archipelago and the only one with hotels, restaurants, and a resident population — the base camp for the whole group, including the day-trip-only Koh Phi Phi Le and its Maya Bay to the south. Two scalloped bays, Tonsai and Loh Dalum, meet at a narrow sandy isthmus that forms the busy heart of the island; from above, the twin bays and the jungle ridges between them are the view that sells Phi Phi. There are no cars — you get around on foot, by longtail, or by porter cart.
Boats dock at Tonsai Pier, where the island’s main strip of dive shops, guesthouses, and seafood grills fans out along the lanes. Long Beach (Hat Yao), a 20-minute longtail ride or coastal walk south, is the pick for swimming and quieter sand, with a house reef just offshore that you can snorkel straight from the beach. The classic effort-reward is the climb to the Phi Phi Viewpoint — a steep 20–30 minute set of steps to the lookout over both bays, best at sunrise or late afternoon. Offshore, dive and snorkel trips run to Bamboo Island, Pileh Lagoon, and the reefs around Phi Phi Le.
The island has two distinct moods. By day it’s a launchpad for boat trips and beach time; after the day-trippers’ ferries leave, Loh Dalum Bay turns into Thailand’s most concentrated beach-party scene — fire shows, buckets, and music until late. Resorts on the quieter eastern beaches (Laem Tong, Loh Bagao) sit well away from the noise if that’s not your thing.
Insider Tip: Stay at least one night. The island empties of day-trippers by late afternoon, and you get the viewpoint at sunrise, the reefs before the boats arrive, and the choice of either the Tonsai party or a silent eastern beach — none of which a day visit delivers.
Watch out: Phi Phi Don was hit hard by the 2004 tsunami and the isthmus is low and flat; evacuation routes to the viewpoint ridge are signposted, and it’s worth noting where they are. Bring cash — ATMs are limited and charge high fees — and reef-safe sunscreen for the snorkelling.
Ferries run regularly from Phuket’s Rassada Pier, Krabi town, and Ao Nang, taking around 1.5 to 2 hours. November to April brings the calmest seas and most reliable schedules; the monsoon months are quieter and cheaper but rougher.
