Maliwan Thai Cooking Class runs a four-hour, hands-on class in Banglamphu, the old-town district of Bangkok around Khao San Road. It takes four people at most, so you get close attention from the teacher.

The class starts with a visit to a nearby local market to buy fresh ingredients, then moves to the kitchen, where you prepare and cook traditional Thai dishes yourself. A welcome drink, all ingredients and equipment, rice, printed recipes and an e-certificate are included.

The school is on Sipsamhang Road, opposite Wat Bowonniwet, but the entrance is at the back of the building. Walk down the small alley next to the Chinese shrine (San Chao Por Khao Tok) or the Domino’s Pizza on Kraisi Road, then turn right. There’s no hotel pickup, which rarely matters here: much of Banglamphu is within walking distance.

Insider Tip: Visit Wat Bowonniwet before or after the class. It’s across the road, and the royal temple sees far fewer visitors than the Grand Palace.

Watch out: Don’t look for the entrance on Sipsamhang Road itself. Head for the alley off Kraisi Road, or you’ll walk round the block.

With a four-person cap, this is one of the more personal classes in the city. Book early in high season (November to February).
