Baan Hollanda

Baan Hollanda is a small museum on the site of the Dutch East India Company’s 17th-century trading lodge, on the Chao Phraya riverbank about 200 metres south of Wat Phananchoeng in Ayutthaya. Entry costs 50 THB for everyone — foreign and Thai visitors pay the same rate — and it’s open Wednesday to Sunday, 09:00–16:00.

The VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) established a lodge here in 1608, one of the first permanent European trading posts in the Siamese capital, dealing mainly in deerskins and sappanwood for the Japan trade. The exhibition rebuilds that history room by room: maps of the original riverside compound, ledgers and trade correspondence, ceramics recovered from the site, and a scale model showing how the lodge looked before it was abandoned in the 1660s after Dutch-Siamese relations soured. Bilingual Thai-English panels carry most of the detail, so it rewards visitors who actually stop to read rather than skim.

The museum is one room deep and takes 45 minutes to an hour at an unhurried pace — this isn’t a half-day stop, more a sharp, specific detour for anyone already working through the historical island’s temples. An upstairs viewing area looks out over the river towards the spot where Dutch ships once moored to unload cargo before the overland journey to Bangkok’s predecessors further south. The scale is intimate: a handful of rooms rather than a sprawling complex, so it never feels crowded even when a tour group passes through.

Insider Tip: The on-site café serves Dutch snacks — bitterballen and kroket — alongside Thai iced tea, a genuinely odd but welcome combination after a hot morning on the historical island. It’s a good reason to linger rather than just clear the exhibition and leave.

Watch out: Baan Hollanda is closed Monday and Tuesday, unlike most of Ayutthaya’s temple sites. Check the day before building it into an itinerary.

Baan Hollanda works best paired with the neighbouring Wat Phananchoeng and the Japanese Village further along the same riverbank, which tells the parallel story of Ayutthaya’s Japanese trading community — together they cover the international side of the old capital that the main temple circuit skips.
