Thai Boat Museum

The Thai Boat Museum in Ayutthaya is the private collection of Phaithun Khaomala, a boat modeller and former boat builder who opened it in 1994. It’s a small, family-run operation rather than a state museum, and it works best with a phone call or advance appointment: the doors aren’t reliably open to walk-in visitors the way a standard attraction’s would be. A boat builder’s own collection

The collection covers traditional Thai and Chinese trade junks, rice barges, and everyday market boats, alongside miniature royal barge models. Some pieces are more than a century old. Because Khaomala built many of the models himself, the craftsmanship on display reflects a working boat-builder’s eye for proportion and construction detail rather than a curator’s general survey. The museum sits on Bang Ian Road, just off Chikun Road and opposite Wat Mahathat, making it an easy add-on to a temple-focused day in Ayutthaya’s historical core. Its scale suits a shorter stop rather than an extended museum visit: plan 45-60 minutes here rather than the half-day some of Ayutthaya’s larger sites demand.

Combine it with Wat Mahathat across the street or the nearby Khun Phaen Residence for a half-day loop through this side of the historical park, but confirm the museum is open before building your schedule around it.
