Institute of Ayutthaya Studies

The Institute of Ayutthaya Studies is a research unit of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Rajabhat University, on the university campus on Rojana Road in Ayutthaya. Established in 2004 out of what had been the university’s Office of Arts and Culture, it documents the former Siamese capital’s history, archaeology, arts, and local folklore rather than presenting a curated tourist exhibit — closer to a university department with public-facing displays than a standalone museum. Entry is free.
What’s on show reflects that research focus: displays on Ayutthaya-period history and archaeology, material on local culture and folk wisdom, and reference resources the institute has compiled through its own fieldwork. It’s a quieter, more academic experience than the city’s major sites — no crowds, no gift shop, and staff who are more likely to be researchers than tour guides. That makes it a better fit for readers who want context beyond what a walk through the temple ruins gives you than for anyone looking for a polished, self-contained museum visit.
- Entry: Free
- Location: Rojana Road, on the Rajabhat University campus, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district
- Phone: 035-241-407
- Best for: Readers wanting deeper historical context; less suited to a quick sightseeing stop
- Not to be confused with: The separate Ayutthaya Historical Study Centre elsewhere in the city
Insider Tip: Call ahead before making a special trip — as a university facility, its hours follow the academic calendar rather than a fixed tourist schedule, and it can be closed or quiet during term breaks.
Watch out: Don’t confuse this with the Ayutthaya Historical Study Centre, a separate and more visitor-oriented museum with reconstructed dioramas of the old royal court. The two names sound alike but are different institutions with different exhibits.
The institute sits an easy tuk-tuk or taxi ride from the historical park, so it works well as an add-on to a day spent around Wat Mahathat or Wat Phra Si Sanphet rather than a standalone trip. If you want the more built-out museum experience covering the same period, the Ayutthaya Historical Study Centre and the Chankasem National Museum are the better-resourced alternatives in town.
