Chiang Rai Walking Street

Every Saturday night, Thanalai Road in Chiang Rai closes to traffic and fills with food stalls, craft vendors, and live music — the city’s main weekly street market, running roughly 1 km along the road near the clock tower. Stalls open from about 3:30-4 PM, the street is busy by 5 PM, and most vendors pack up by 10 PM, with the 6-8 PM window the most crowded. Entry is free.

The market runs in loose zones rather than a strict layout: a food stretch with a BBQ lane about halfway down serving grilled meats and river fish, stalls clearly marked halal, vegan, or gluten-free, and a craft section where you’ll see live wood carving, batik demonstrations, and hill-tribe embroidery alongside silver jewellery and woven textiles. Small stages along the route carry acoustic sets and folk performances through the evening. It’s a market Chiang Rai residents actually use, not one built solely for visitors — families, students, and older couples eating together at shared tables outnumber tour groups most weeks.

Insider Tip: Arrive by 5-5:30 PM. Most stalls are already open, the crowd is thinner, and you’ll get a table without queuing — by 6 PM, seating at the food stalls gets tight.

Note this is the Saturday market specifically. Chiang Rai also runs a smaller Sunday-night market on San Khong Noi Road, near Wat Chetuphon — a different street on a different night, leaning more toward food stalls and stage performances than the handicraft variety Thanalai Road offers on Saturdays. Don’t show up to Thanalai on a Sunday expecting it to be running.

Watch out: Most stalls are cash-only. There’s an ATM near the clock tower if you arrive short, but it’s a walk from the middle of the market.
