Mae Sai Market

Mae Sai Market runs daily from around 06:00 to 18:00 along Phahonyothin Road in Chiang Rai’s northernmost town, a few minutes’ walk from the Thai-Myanmar border crossing. It’s a browsing-and-bargain market rather than a sightseeing stop — the appeal is the goods themselves and the fact that you can walk to an international border afterward.

What’s on Sale

Stalls on the Thai side sell Burmese jade and gemstones, longyi (sarong-style fabric), thanaka powder, dried foods, and clothing, much of it trucked in from Tachileik on the Myanmar side just across the Sai River. Jade quality varies enormously between stalls — treat any “certificate of authenticity” from a street vendor with scepticism and buy higher-value pieces only from a shop with a fixed address. Electronics and branded goods sold here are frequently counterfeit; Thai customs limits duty-free imports to one bottle of alcohol and one carton of cigarettes per person if you cross over and back.

Atmosphere and Timing

The market is busiest in the morning before the heat sets in, and on Sundays when day-trippers combine a shopping stop with photos at the Friendship Bridge checkpoint. It’s a working border market, not a curated tourist bazaar — expect narrow covered walkways, motorbikes threading through foot traffic, and vendors who switch between Thai, Burmese, and Mandarin depending on who’s in front of them.

Insider Tip: Walk a few minutes further to the bridge itself even if you don’t cross — the river marking the Thailand-Myanmar border is a five-minute detour from the market stalls and costs nothing to view.

Watch out: Crossing into Tachileik (Myanmar) requires your passport and, depending on nationality, a same-day entry fee at the checkpoint — check current requirements before you queue, as rules for foreign nationals change more often than for Thai citizens.
