Wat Khao Tham

Wat Khao Tham is a hillside temple and meditation centre in the forested hills above Ban Tai on Koh Phangan. It’s open to visitors but it isn’t a standard tourist temple — it’s a working monastery best known for its 10-day silent retreats and for one of the finest viewpoints on the island, looking across the sea to Koh Samui. Entry is free.

The temple and the view

A short, steep walk up from the parking area brings you to the temple grounds — a reclining Buddha, scattered chedis, stone carvings and a Buddha footprint, with paintings depicting the life of the Buddha. The reason most visitors climb up, though, is the viewpoint platform: it takes in the south of Koh Phangan, stretches north toward Hin Kong, and looks out over the water to Koh Samui. It’s a popular, peaceful spot for sunset.

Insider Tip: Come in the late afternoon for the light and the cooler climb, but check first that a retreat isn’t in silent session — during a course the atmosphere is deliberately quiet and parts of the grounds are off-limits to casual visitors.

Meditation retreats

The adjoining Khao Tham Insight Meditation Center runs 10-day silent Vipassana retreats on a fixed monthly rhythm — usually an English-language course from the 10th to the 20th and a Russian-language one from the 23rd to the 30th. Meals and basic accommodation are included and covered by donation. It’s a serious commitment, not a drop-in class, and places are limited, so check the schedule and register well ahead.

Watch out: This is a consecrated, active site. Dress modestly (shoulders, upper arms and knees covered), take your shoes off before entering buildings, keep noise down, and ask before photographing anyone. Don’t sit or stand on the statues.

For more of the west coast, the sunset beaches at Hin Kong and Secret Beach are a short ride away.
