Huai Nam Dang National Park

Huai Nam Dang National Park’s main draw is the Doi Kiew Lom viewpoint, where a sea of mist fills the valleys below at sunrise on clear cool-season mornings. The 1,252 sq km park straddles the border between Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai provinces — Chiang Mai is the practical access route for most visitors despite the park office sitting on the Mae Hong Son side — with elevation running from about 400 up to 2,000 metres, which is what makes the mist phenomenon possible in the first place.

Getting the sea of mist requires timing: the best window is roughly 05:30-07:30, so a pre-dawn drive up the unlit mountain road to the viewpoint is part of the experience, not optional. Cool season, November through February, gives the most reliable results, when clear nights let temperatures drop enough for mist to pool in the valleys before sunrise burns it off. Outside those months you can still visit, but don’t plan a trip around guaranteed mist in April or during the rains.

Foreigner entry is 300 THB for adults and 150 THB for children; Thai nationals pay 40 and 20 THB. The same ticket also covers Tha Pai Hot Spring elsewhere in the park on the same day, so it’s worth combining the two rather than paying twice. Beyond the viewpoint, the park’s pine-and-oak forest cover and hot springs give it a genuinely cooler, quieter feel than the lowlands — camping is allowed at designated sites near the visitor centre, with tents available to rent.

Insider Tip: Bring a torch and warm layers for the pre-dawn walk to the viewpoint platform — at 2,000 m in the cool season, temperatures can sit close to freezing before sunrise even though you’re only a couple of hours from Pai’s tropical heat.

Watch out: The access road has sharp bends and no lighting. Doing it in the dark for a sunrise visit is standard practice locally, but drive slowly and use full headlights — this isn’t a road to rush.

Pair the sunrise visit with Tha Pai Hot Spring on the same ticket, or the mountain road out to Pai Canyon on the way back into town.
