Namtok Hin Phoeng

Namtok Hin Phoeng is a three-tier waterfall on the Krabi mainland, not on Koh Lanta island despite occasionally appearing in searches for the island. It sits in Khlong Thom district, within the Khao Pra-Bang Khram range — the same protected area that shelters the Emerald Pool a short drive away. Entry is free, water drops from an 800-metre limestone cliff face, and the walk in from the nearest village is about 400 metres.

The falls are reached via Ban Hin Phoeng, a village in Khlong Phon subdistrict roughly 25km from the Khlong Thom district office. From the village, a mountain-slope path of around 400 metres leads to the base of the falls — a short walk rather than a serious trek, though the ground is uneven and can turn muddy after rain. The three tiers step down the limestone face in succession, with pools forming at each level; the upper two tiers carry the most volume and are generally considered the more photogenic sections. Forest closes in tightly on both sides of the path, and the sound of the falls carries through the trees well before the water itself comes into view.

Because it sits inside Krabi’s Khao Pra-Bang Khram protected area rather than on a tour-bus circuit, Hin Phoeng gets a fraction of the footfall of Krabi’s better-known cascades. That’s the trade-off: no facilities, no vendors, and a genuinely quiet stretch of jungle, but also nothing to fall back on if you arrive without water or decent shoes.

Insider Tip: Pair the visit with Namtok Ron Khlong Thom or the Khao Pra-Bang Khram Wildlife Sanctuary headquarters nearby — both sit in the same district and cut down on backtracking if you’re exploring Khlong Thom’s natural sites in one trip.

Watch out: There’s no ticket booth, no marked trailhead signage in English, and mobile signal is patchy on the approach road. Confirm directions with your accommodation or a local before setting out, and don’t rely on finding anyone at the site to ask.

Visit during or just after the rainy season (roughly June to November) for the strongest flow; the dry season can reduce the upper tiers to a trickle. Wear shoes with grip rather than sandals, bring your own water, and pack insect repellent — there’s nowhere to buy either on site.
