Namtok Phraiwan

Namtok Phraiwan is the largest and best-known waterfall in Phatthalung province, tumbling over limestone rock in seven tiers inside Khao Banthad Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s free to visit, open roughly 8am to 4:30pm daily, and sits about 44 km from Phatthalung town along Highway 4122. Almost everyone who visits sees only the first tier — it’s the one with the easy path and the swimmable pool.

That first-tier pool is where most people spend their time: a broad, shallow basin fed by water sliding over a wide rock shelf, cool enough to be a genuine relief in the hot season and shallow enough at the edges for kids to wade. The path in from the parking area near Ban Phut forest protection unit is short and mostly flat, following the stream through mixed lowland forest. Past that first drop, the remaining six tiers climb higher into the sanctuary along ground that isn’t signposted or maintained as a trail — locals who know the route can lead you further, but this isn’t a hike to attempt solo without water, decent shoes, and daylight to spare.

Watch out: rocks around the pool edges get slick with algae, especially after rain, and there’s no lifeguard or barrier — mind your footing and keep an eye on kids near the deeper sections.

Rainy season (June–October) brings the heaviest flow and the most dramatic first-tier drop, but also stronger current in the pool. The cooler dry months (November–February) trade some of that power for calmer, clearer water that’s easier to sit in for a while. Either way, the surrounding Khao Banthad forest keeps the air noticeably cooler than the coastal lowlands, and the walk in stays shaded most of the way.

Insider Tip: Weekday mornings are quiet even in high season — Phraiwan gets a lot of local day-trippers on weekends, but foreign visitors are still rare enough that you’ll likely have the pool close to yourself if you arrive before 10am.
