Namtok Than Ngam Forest Park

Namtok Than Ngam Forest Park is a multi-tiered waterfall about 3 km off the Udon Thani–Nong Bua Lam Phu road, set in mixed deciduous forest that was declared a forest park in 1984. Entry is free, and the gates are open daily from 08:00 to 18:00 (40 THB to park a car). Like most Udon Thani waterfalls, it runs strongest in the rainy season and can slow to a trickle by the hot months — worth checking conditions before a special trip outside July–October.

From the parking area it’s a 300-400 metre walk to the falls, along a path that leads through deciduous forest — species here include ta baek, pradu, and daeng, giving the park a different canopy from the tropical rainforest waterfalls further south. The water drops over several rock tiers into pools at the base, deep enough for swimming when the flow is up. Wooden walkways and stone paths connect the main viewing spots, and beyond the waterfall itself the forest park also has a cliff area and a cave that get far fewer visitors than the falls.

Weekdays and early mornings are quietest; Thai families tend to arrive from late morning on weekends and public holidays, picnicking on the grass near the pools. There’s shade throughout most of the walking trails, which helps in the hot season even when the waterfall itself is dry.

Insider Tip: If you’re visiting outside the rainy season, call ahead (0 4222 1725) to check whether the falls are actually running — Isan forest-park waterfalls like this one can dry up completely by March or April, and the walk in isn’t worth it without water.

Getting here from Udon Thani city takes about 30-40 minutes by car: head out on Route 210 toward Nong Bua Lam Phu, turn left onto Route 2313 roughly 3 km past Udon Thani airport, then follow the road through Nong Saeng village to the park entrance. There’s no direct public transport, so your own vehicle or a hired driver is the practical option. Bring swimwear and a towel if the water’s up, and pack food — there are no restaurants inside the park.

Phu Foi Lom, a countryside viewpoint hill also in Nong Saeng district, pairs well with a Than Ngam visit if you’re spending a day in this part of the province. Udon Thani city is the nearest base for accommodation and onward transport.
