Huai Luang Reservoir
อ่างเก็บน้ำห้วยหลวง
Huai Luang Reservoir is a Royal Irrigation Department dam and water-storage lake about 25-30 km west of Udon Thani city, reached via Highway 210 toward Nong Bua Lam Phu. Entry is free, open roughly 08:30-16:30 daily, and the draws are bank fishing, a walk along the dam crest, and early-morning birdwatching.
The reservoir is a working piece of infrastructure before it’s an attraction — one of the raw-water sources feeding Udon Thani’s municipal supply, alongside irrigation for farmland across Udon Thani province’s Mueang district. That doesn’t make it a bad place to spend an hour: the water stretches far enough that the far shore blurs into haze on a hot afternoon, and the dam crest gives an elevated view across it. Fishing is the main activity for Thai visitors, with people casting from the bank or paddling out in small rented boats after tilapia and other freshwater species stocked by the irrigation project.
Early morning is when the reservoir earns its keep for birdwatchers — herons and egrets work the marshy margins where the water is shallow, and migratory waterfowl pass through during the cooler months (November-February). Photographers get a similar payoff: still water throws a near-perfect reflection of the sky at dawn before boat traffic and wind break the surface.
Insider Tip: Arrive before 8 AM. By mid-morning the light flattens and the fishing crowd’s boat wakes ripple the water enough to kill the reflections that make the early visit worthwhile.
There’s little infrastructure beyond the access road and dam — no visitor centre, no fixed food court, just a scattering of local stalls that tend to appear on weekends when families come out for picnics on the grassy banks. Weekdays are noticeably quieter. Bring your own water and sun protection; shade is limited once you’re away from the car park.
Watch out: This is a functioning reservoir with a working dam, not a swimming spot — currents near the spillway and sluice gates are genuinely dangerous, and there’s no lifeguard.
- Entry: Free (Thai and foreign visitors)
- Hours: Daily, roughly 08:30-16:30
- Getting there: ~25-30 km west of Udon Thani city via Highway 210, about 30-40 minutes by car
- Best time: Early morning for birdlife and calm water; November-February for cooler weather and migratory birds
- Facilities: Minimal — a few weekend food stalls, no swimming area or visitor centre
Pair it with Nong Prachak Public Park back in Udon Thani city for a more manicured lakeside walk, or drive out to Nong Han Lake at Kumphawapi if you’re visiting December-February for the red lotus bloom instead of a working reservoir.
