Ob Khan National Park

Ob Khan National Park protects a stretch of the Khan River in Nam Phrae subdistrict, Hang Dong district — roughly 30km southwest of Chiang Mai city, on the opposite side of town from Mae Rim. The protected area actually spans four Chiang Mai districts (Hang Dong, San Pa Tong, Mae Wang, and Samoeng), but the main gate and river gorge that most visitors come for sit in Hang Dong. Entry is free, and the park gate is open daily 08:30-16:30.

The main trail follows the Khan River past a series of natural rock pools carved into granite, with the signature “ob” — a narrow gorge where the river squeezes between smooth stone walls — as the centrepiece. Shorter side trails branch off toward quieter pools upstream and a viewpoint over the forested canyon. Birdsong and running water carry through the valley more reliably than any specific wildlife sighting; go early and quietly for the best chance of spotting something beyond butterflies along the bank.

The rainy season (roughly June-October) fills the river out but also speeds up the current and slicks the rocks — the park sometimes closes for a day after heavy rain, so it’s worth checking conditions rather than driving out on spec during the wettest months. Cool season (November-April) gives calmer water and easier footing for swimming and rock-hopping.

Insider Tip: Arrive on a weekday morning if you can — the gorge’s swimming pools are compact, and weekend crowds from Chiang Mai city fill them fast once the day heats up.

Watch out: The granite rocks around the pools are slippery even when they look dry. Water shoes make a real difference here, and a waterproof bag protects phones and cameras if you’re wading through the narrows.

Combine the visit with Ban Tawai Woodcarving Village, also in Hang Dong district and a short drive from the park entrance, for a full day that mixes river time with Chiang Mai’s best-known craft market.
