Mae Klang Waterfall drops in three tiers a short walk from Doi Inthanon National Park’s main checkpoint on Route 1009, Chom Thong district. Seeing the falls themselves costs nothing — the parking area and lower viewing paths sit right at the park boundary, before the ticket gate. Continue past that checkpoint toward the summit, the Twin Pagodas, or Kew Mae Pan, though, and the standard park fee kicks in: 300 THB for foreign adults, 150 THB for foreign children aged 3-14, 60 THB for Thai adults.
The lower tier is the one most people come for — a wide, shallow pool fed by the main cascade, shallow enough for families to wade in and popular enough that it fills up by mid-morning. Paths climb toward the middle and upper tiers, where the pools narrow and deepen between smooth rock outcrops; the going gets steeper and wetter underfoot the higher you climb, and the spray keeps the air noticeably cooler than the car park below. Forest closes in on both sides, and the sound of the falls carries well before you see them.
Because Mae Klang sits right at the gate, it’s the first stop for almost every organized Doi Inthanon day trip out of Chiang Mai — tour vans start arriving from around 9 AM, and the lower pool area gets crowded fast once they do. Independent travelers who arrive at checkpoint opening have the falls largely to themselves for an hour or so before the buses catch up.
Insider Tip: Come at checkpoint opening, roughly 6 AM, to see the falls before the tour groups arrive — Mae Klang is everyone’s first photo stop on the mountain, and by mid-morning the lower pool and parking area are packed.
Watch out: Rocks around the pools are slick, and the current strengthens noticeably in the rainy season (June-October). Swim only in the calmer lower pool, not near the base of the main cascade.
Mae Klang pairs naturally with the rest of a Doi Inthanon run — Doi Inthanon National Park itself, the taller drop at Namtok Wachirathan further up the mountain, and the boardwalk trail at Kew Mae Pan near the summit, all reachable on the same road. For a base, Chiang Mai is the standard jumping-off point, roughly 1.5-2 hours away by car.
