Sao Hin Phaya Nak Cave

Sao Hin Phaya Nak Cave is a temple-run cave system in Pong Ngam subdistrict, Mae Sai district — part of Wat Tham Sao Hin Phaya Nak, closer to Mae Sai town than to the Mae Salong hills it’s grouped with on tourism listings. The name translates to roughly “Naga King’s stone pillars,” after limestone columns inside that hang and stand like house pillars, tied to local folklore about a guardian naga.

The passage runs 50 to 70 metres into the hillside before opening into a wider chamber known locally as “Larn Phayanak” (Naga Hall) — the feature the whole site is named for. Along the way, smaller alcoves hold Buddhist shrines with offerings and incense left by visitors and monks from the attached temple. Outside the cave mouth, water draining from Sao Hin Phaya Nak and two neighbouring caves (Tham Pla and Tham Pum) collects into a small reservoir ringed by trees — a quieter stop than the cave itself and a reasonable spot to sit before or after the climb.

Insider Tip: Bring your own light. The temple provides minimal fixed lighting near the entrance, and a headlamp frees both hands for the uneven stone floor deeper in.

Watch out: Stone inside stays damp and can be slick, particularly near the mineral-streaked walls close to Naga Hall. Solid footwear with grip matters more than a strong torch here.

This is a working temple site, not a managed show cave — there’s no formal gate fee, just a donation box near the main shrine, and no scheduled tours. Visit respectfully: cover shoulders and knees as you would at any Thai temple, and keep voices down near the shrine niches.

The cave sits within reach of Doi Mae Salong as a wider day-trip base, though the drive from the Mae Salong hill area itself runs closer to an hour given the mountain roads — pairing it with a Mae Sai border-town stop makes more geographic sense than tacking it onto a tea-plantation day. From central Chiang Rai, plan on roughly an hour by car along Highway 1 toward Mae Sai, then local roads into Pong Ngam.
