The Nine-Army Battle Historical Park

The Nine-Army Battle Historical Park in Kanchanaburi is a Royal Thai Army memorial hall built in 1999 to mark the site where Siamese forces broke a nine-pronged Burmese invasion in 1785. Entry is free, open 10:00-16:00 on weekdays and 08:00-17:00 on weekends.

What happened here

In 1785, early in King Rama I’s reign, Burmese king Bodawpaya sent an estimated 144,000 troops in nine armies to invade Siam through the mountain passes above Kanchanaburi. The main Siamese defence, commanded by the Front Palace viceroy Maha Sura Singhanat (the king’s brother), held the Burmese at Lam Sondao before pushing the reserve force back through Three Pagodas Pass. Thai accounts put Burmese losses at around 70,000 against 15,000 Siamese — a lopsided result that ended Burma’s last serious attempt to conquer central Siam.

Experience

The park is a single exhibition building shaped like an ancient soldier’s helmet, not an open battlefield you walk across. Inside, air-conditioned halls hold battle dioramas, a sand-table model of the troop routes through the passes, glass cases of replica weapons and period armour, and figures of local folk heroes “Pu Man” and “Pu Khong” who feature in the oral history of the campaign. Labels run in Thai and English. Out front stands a statue of Maha Sura Singhanat, the commander credited with the victory.

Insider Tip: Combine the visit with the Death Railway sites near Kanchanaburi town rather than making it a standalone trip — the eras don’t overlap (this is 1785, the railway is 1943), but both sit on the same drive northwest out of town.

Atmosphere & timing

This is a quiet, low-traffic stop — most Kanchanaburi itineraries skip it entirely in favour of the Bridge on the River Kwai and Hellfire Pass. Expect 30-45 minutes inside, longer if you read every panel. The building’s air conditioning makes it a useful midday break from the heat.

Watch out: Weekday hours run shorter (10:00-16:00) than weekends (08:00-17:00) — check the day before driving out, since it’s a 40-minute detour from town with little else nearby.

Practical

There’s no on-site café, so bring water for the drive. Pair it with the Ancient Town of Kanchanaburi or Chong Kai War Cemetery if you’re building a history-focused day around the province, though note those sites cover a different era (WWII) than the Nine Armies campaign here.
