Wat Kong Karn

Wat Kong Karn sits in Mae Suek, a rural subdistrict of Mae Chaem district — about 117 km and a 2-hour drive from Chiang Mai city on the mountain road that runs through Doi Inthanon National Park. This isn’t a side trip you tack onto an old-city temple crawl; it’s a destination in its own right, reached via one of northern Thailand’s most scenic and steepest drives.

The temple functions as Mae Suek’s community anchor — the venue for alms rounds, seasonal festivals, and the kind of everyday merit-making that keeps a small rural monastery running. Inside, mural paintings record pieces of local Mae Chaem heritage alongside the standard Buddhist iconography, and the grounds carry the wooden-and-stucco look typical of northern Lanna temple building: golden stupas set against timber structures rather than the stone and brick more common further south.
