Wat Mathurottiyaram

Wat Mathurottiyaram is a village-level Buddhist temple in Ban It subdistrict, one of eight temples serving this corner of Mueang Ang Thong district, about 5 kilometres from Ang Thong town centre. Locally it’s also known as Wat Kut. Entry is free, open daily 08:00-17:00, and there’s no documented founding date or notable historical event attached to it — it’s a working community temple rather than a heritage site.

Ang Thong province is unusually dense with temples — over 200 across an area smaller than many single districts elsewhere in Thailand — and Wat Mathurottiyaram is one of the ordinary ones: a modest ubosot, a scattering of Buddha images inside, and a resident monastic community that serves Ban It’s households rather than tour groups. Morning and evening you’ll hear chanting from the ordination hall, and locals dropping by with offerings is a more common sight than visiting travellers. There’s no grand chedi or documented mural cycle here to draw a special trip — the temple’s value is as a still-functioning piece of everyday Thai Buddhist life, the kind that outnumbers the marquee sites by a wide margin in a province like Ang Thong.

Insider Tip: Fold Wat Mathurottiyaram into a wider Ang Thong temple loop rather than visiting alone — pair it with Wat Muang (the giant seated Buddha) and Wat Khun Inthapramun (one of Thailand’s oldest reclining Buddhas), both a short drive away, so the trip out justifies itself.

Dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering the ubosot. The temple is reachable by local transport or a short taxi ride from Ang Thong town — there’s no public bus route that stops directly outside.
