Wat Suwansewariyaram

Wat Suwansewariyaram sits on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River in Ang Thong province, about 3 km from the provincial city hall along the irrigation canal road (or off Highway 32 at km 103–104). Locally known as Wat Kuti, it was formally established on 6 March 1844 and belongs to the Mahanikaya order of Thai Buddhism.

The temple’s most significant feature is a large reclining Buddha — Phra Rod Wachira Molee — measuring roughly 20 metres in length, housed within the main wiharn. The image is believed to date from the Ayutthaya period and is comparable in scale to the reclining Buddha at nearby Wat Pa Mok. Its history is unusual: originally placed on the Chao Phraya riverbank during the reign of King Song Tham (around 1620), it fell into the river over time and was not recovered and moved to this temple until 1947, by the merit-maker Phra Maha Wichian Khannak. The wiharn built to house it was completed in 1959.

The ordination hall contains wall murals on all four sides, painted during the Rattanakosin era — roughly the reigns of Rama IV and Rama V — by royal artisans, in a style that reflects Western influence through shading, perspective and landscape composition, similar to murals at Wat Chaiyo Worawihan. Elsewhere on the grounds stands a stucco Buddha whose head is an Ayutthaya-period stone original, relocated here from the abandoned Wat Phi Thanon.

Admission is free. Remove shoes before entering buildings and dress with covered shoulders and knees. The temple is quieter than Ang Thong’s better-known sites and suits visitors interested in regional temple art.
