Wat Plot Sat

Wat Plot Sat sits in Ban Hae, about 7 kilometres from Ang Thong town along Highway 3501, an active community temple belonging to the Thammayut order rather than the more common Mahanikaya lineage found at most Ang Thong temples. Entry is free, and the temple keeps standard daylight hours, 08:00 to 17:00.

The name is the temple’s most interesting feature. “Plot Sat” translates as “liberation of animals,” and it was given by Somdet Phra Maha Samana Chao Krom Phra Wachirayanawarorot, a Supreme Patriarch of Thai Buddhism during King Chulalongkorn’s reign, in recognition of the merit-making practice of freeing captive animals. That’s a more specific and personal naming story than most Thai temples get, where names more often describe a location, a founder’s family, or a physical feature.

Insider Tip: There’s no English signage and no dedicated parking area — this is a genuinely local temple, so ask for directions once you’re in Ban Hae rather than relying on GPS alone, which can route you to the wrong side of the grounds.

Inside the grounds stands a stupa dating to King Rama V’s reign, alongside the working ordination hall and monks’ quarters typical of an active Ang Thong temple. This isn’t a ruin or an archaeological site, despite what some older write-ups claim — it’s a functioning temple that happens to have a 19th-century chedi on its grounds, and it draws local worshippers rather than coach tours.

Watch out: avoid treating this as an Ayutthaya ruins stop on a history itinerary — that’s not what’s here. It’s worth visiting for the name, the stupa, and the quiet, working-temple atmosphere, not for ancient ruins.

Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and remove your shoes before entering any building. Wat Plot Sat works best as one stop on a wider loop of Mueang Ang Thong district temples rather than a destination on its own — combine it with the City Pillar Shrine or Wat Chai Mongkhon, both a short drive away in the same district.
