Khao Sakaekrang
เขาสะแกกรัง
Khao Sakaekrang rises on the western edge of Uthai Thani town, and its summit is the site of Wat Sangkat Rattana Khiri, a temple built in 1900 that locals consider the spiritual guardian of the province. A brick staircase of roughly 449 steps climbs from the temple courtyard at the base to the mondop at the top, though a paved access road also reaches the summit for anyone who’d rather drive than climb. Entry to both the mountain and the temple is free, open daily from around 06:00 to 18:00.
The temple’s main Buddha image, seated in the Mara Vijaya (subduing Mara) posture, has been venerated in Uthai Thani since the early Rattanakosin period. Near the summit sits a smaller but genuinely unusual landmark: a Laplace Station geodetic marker, one of only three in Asia, placed here in the 1970s as a fixed reference point for calibrating satellite-era maps of the region — a detail most hikers walk straight past without realizing what it is.
From the top, the view opens over Uthai Thani’s rice fields and the Sakae Krang River, which runs 225 kilometers from Mae Wong National Park in Nakhon Sawan before joining the Chao Phraya near the city. Insider Tip: Climb in the early morning — the stairs get full sun by mid-morning with little shade, and the haze over the plains clears fastest in the first couple of hours after sunrise.
Watch out: the 449 steps are uneven in places and can be slick after rain; grippy shoes matter more than fitness here. Bring water — there’s little for sale partway up, only at the base and occasionally near the summit.
