Wat Phayawat’s chedi breaks from the usual bell-shaped silhouette you’ll see across most of Thailand — it’s square, built up from four tiered square layers into an inverted-lotus section trimmed with carved pearl pendants. Historians date the design to around the 21st Buddhist century (roughly the 1400s-1500s CE) and trace its inspiration to Chedi Ku Kut at Wat Chama Thewi in Lamphun, one of the oldest surviving chedi forms in the north. Each square tier houses standing Buddha images carved in a style shaped by Sukhothai art — a detail worth actually walking the base of the chedi to see, rather than just photographing it from a distance.

A separate shrine on the grounds holds Phra Chao Fan Saen Ha, also known locally as Phra Chao Sai Fon — a Buddha image specifically associated with calling rain. Farmers and locals from the surrounding Du Tai subdistrict still come to pray here during dry spells, which gives the temple a genuine, ongoing role in the community rather than being a preserved-for-tourists relic. The main hall’s carved wooden dharma doors are worth a slow look on the way in, and the interior murals depict the Vessantara Jataka — the tale of Prince Vessantara’s final act of total generosity before his rebirth as the Buddha, rendered here in the kind of detailed brushwork that rewards a few extra minutes rather than a walk-through.

Wat Phayawat sits in Tambon Du Tai on the southern edge of Mueang Nan district, close enough to the temples clustered in Nan’s old town that it slots easily into a half-day temple circuit rather than requiring a special trip. Watch out: this temple is in Nan province — it isn’t reached via Chiang Rai’s Highway 1025, despite what some older listings suggest; route your visit from Nan town itself.

Pair it with Wat Phumin or Wat Suan Tarn for a fuller sense of Nan’s temple architecture — Phayawat’s square chedi stands out precisely because it looks so different from the more familiar bell-shaped stupas found at those two.
