Tambon Bo Suak Community

Bo Suak is a working pottery village about 15-20 minutes’ drive from Nan town, where potters still throw and fire clay using techniques passed down through roughly 700 years of local production. In 2024, UN Tourism (formerly UNWTO) named it Thailand’s first-ever Best Tourism Village, one of 55 communities recognized worldwide that year for sustainable, community-run tourism.

This is a distinct site from the Bo Suak ancient kiln site nearby, which is an excavated archaeological dig with two restored, roofed kilns and a small artefact exhibition — no potters working there today. The community covered on this page is the opposite: living workshops where you watch, and can try, pottery and weaving as they’re still practiced. Local ceramics carry motifs specific to Bo Suak, including owl and arrow patterns tied to the area’s Buddhist cosmology, distinct from the plainer glazed wares recovered from the ancient kilns. Bo Suak tambon itself is home to more than 6,500 residents across its villages. The area is also known locally for an ancient salt pond alongside its pottery tradition — another strand of the subdistrict’s history that predates the tourism recognition.

Visitors can join hands-on sessions with individual artisans — kneading clay, shaping a simple piece on the wheel, and trying basic weaving on a wooden loom. These are arranged locally through the community rather than as a fixed-price ticketed activity, so expect to pay per session rather than a blanket entry fee. Walking through the village itself, past homes and workshops, costs nothing.

Watch out: Public transport doesn’t reach the village directly. A car, motorbike, or a tour arranged from Nan town is the only practical way in and out.

Morning visits catch workshops at their most active, before the midday heat. Bring cash for workshop fees and any pottery or textiles you want to buy, and dress modestly — this is still a residential community, not a staged attraction.
