Open Water Course - Become certified diver in 3 days

5.0 (1,141 reviews) Top rated

Highlights

  • PADI Open Water certification course
  • Small group of max 18 guests
  • Thai lunch at a local restaurant
  • 3-day tour at a steady pace

Koh Tao is where about a third of the world’s PADI Open Water certifications happen, and this three-day course is the reason why. Warm water, calm Gulf-side dive sites, and a price point well below what you’d pay in Australia or the Caribbean — you finish with a lifetime certification rated to 18 metres with a buddy. The course follows the standard PADI structure: theory, confined water skills, then four open water dives spread across a few of the island’s best training sites.

Day one covers the academic sessions and your first confined water skills in a pool — mask clearing, regulator recovery, buoyancy basics. Day two brings another theory block in the morning, then your first two open water dives in the afternoon at a maximum depth of 12 metres across two separate sites. Day three is the payoff: two dives at 18 metres on the island’s better reef sites — Japanese Gardens, Twins, or Chumphon Pinnacle depending on conditions — followed by the final written exam back at the school. Lunch, tea and coffee are included each day, along with all SCUBA gear, the online theory materials, and your digital certification card.

Group size is capped at a small number per instructor for safety. The pace is steady rather than rushed, which matters when you’re learning a new environment. You need to be in reasonable health — a standard PADI medical questionnaire covers anything that might disqualify you. No swimming marathons required, but you’ll need to float for ten minutes and swim 200 metres unaided. Seasickness tablets are worth packing if you’re prone; the boat rides to dive sites are short but choppy in the monsoon months.

Book a few days ahead in high season (December to March), and leave 24 hours between your last dive and any flight home.
