Ken Diamond Co.Ltd Tour & Travel takes a group of up to nine from Hua Hin to Petchaburi for a six-hour tour of three sites, each given an hour. Petchaburi is described as one of the oldest provinces in Thailand, and the day is built around its hill palace, a temple and a cave shrine. The vehicle is air-conditioned and the guide speaks English.

First is Khao Wang, the 92-metre hill that holds Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park, home to the Summer Palace of King Rama 5. You ride a cable car to the top, and the white chedi can be seen from far away. Next is Wat Mahathat Worawihan, whose showpiece is a 42-metre, five-tiered Ayuthaya-style prang decorated in stucco relief. Inside the sanctuary are early-20th-century murals, which the operator calls important but badly damaged. The last stop is Tham Khao Luang, a stalactite cavern used as a cave shrine and filled with Buddha statues, reached by steep stairs.

Bottled water and lunch are included, as is admission at all three stops. Tips are not. Pickup times are confirmed by email or WhatsApp the day before.

Insider Tip: The operator says sunbeams light the cave through a natural skylight every morning, clouds permitting. Wear shoes with good grip for the stairs and bring a camera.

Watch out: The operator calls the tour wheelchair accessible and suitable for all fitness levels, yet the cave is reached by steep stairs. If mobility is a concern, ask the operator before booking. Temples expect covered shoulders and knees.

This suits history and temple fans who want a guided day trip from Hua Hin; it is not a beach or nature day.

Itinerary

1

Khao Wang (Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park)

Khao Wang or Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park is a notable tourist site in Petchaburi Province; it is the symbol of the province. Khao Wang stands out and can be seen from a far distance, including the white chedi and buildings. Khao Wang is the ancient remains of Petchaburi Province, located on a 92-meter-high mountain. The group takes the cable car to the top of the mountain.

2

Wat Mahathat Worawihan

Centrally located, gleaming white Wat Mahathat is one impressive temple. The showpiece is a 42m-tall five-tiered Ayuthaya-style prang (corn-cob shaped stupa) decorated in stucco relief, a specialty of Phetchaburi’s local artisans you'll see all over town. Inside the wí·hăhn (sanctuary) that fronts it are important, though highly damaged, early-20th-century murals.

3

Tham Khao Luang Cave

About 4km north of town is Khao Luang Cave, a dramatic stalactite-stuffed cavern that's one of Thailand’s most impressive cave shrines, and a favorite of King Rama IV when he was a monk. Accessed via steep stairs, it's lit by a heavenly glow every morning (clouds permitting) when sunbeams filter in through the natural skylight.
